i like rugby

I used to hate rugby. It made no sense. It was boring. And hey, I'm a Perth girl, born and bred - AFL is THE Game.

The was until some people decided that Perth needed a Super 14 team more than Melbourne did. Perth people hating Victorians, we thought that was the greatest thing ever.

Their first game of the Super 14 was tonight. It was sold out. I got a free ticket courtesy of Adam. I thought I'd go for the 'life experience' and to make me more 'well rounded'.

I actually had to study the idiot's guide to rugby that The West had published the day before. I understood the basics. I was ready to watch.

So yeah, I got to sit in the media section with most of Channel 10 and some of the ABC and some drunken ACT Brumbies fans. That was pretty cool. Seeing the whole crowd cheer at something I didn't understand and then going, 'Yay! Us!' even though I had no idea what had just happened and why we were cheering.

I had fun, our team lost, but there were non-stop Mexican waves, many injured players and people watching to be had.

Everyone was telling me that I'd have to 'be careful, because there'd be big, scary rugby fans there'. They were wrong, I was surrounded by sports reporters who would prefer not to be featured in Inside Cover. I kind of wanted to be in a crowd where everyone was a little more passionate, perhaps agro even.

All in all, I like rugby.

But not as much as AFL.
