6 degrees of myspace.

MySpace is not as addictive as everyone makes it out to be. Not everyone you know is on it, but somehow everyone is in your extended network. Even those 'cool new people' that seem to pop up when you're on the front page.

Today I'm going to find out if there's six degrees between a coo
l new person and my very own, ever so popular (59 friends and counting) self. I'm going to test this 6 degrees thing while I blog so there's no cheatskis.

The rules are:
  • Get the first 'cool new person'
  • Find someone on their friends list who you recognise.
  • If you can't find someone you recognise, click on someone that looks like someone you know
  • Rinse, lather, repeat five times.
  • See if you can get back to you.
So here we go.

My 'cool new person' is Judy.
Everyone say Hi Judy! Judy is from Newcastle, home of Jennifer Hawkins, she's originally from Canada and she has 130 friends. More importantly, she is in my extended network.

I couldn't find anyone on Judy's friends list that I recognised, and could therefore link back to me, so I chose Flash because I'm sure at least one of my friends would h
ave a myspace pic with a green splodge on their face.
Welcome aboard Flash. Flash is quite cool, she lives in Ballarat, likes smoking and has 143 friends. More importantly, she is in my extended network.

Unfortunately, Flash didn't have anyone I knew on there. So I went for the
next best thing, a midget named Paddy, because surely, someone I knew would know a short person with and Irish name.
Paddy is popular. He runs a bar in Ballarat, collects musical instruments and has 395 friends. More importantly, he is in my extended network.

While Paddy proved to have many interesting friends, there was noone I knew hanging around Paddy's place. But I did meet Sophie who had an Optimus Prime avatar, maybe I would get back to me, through my brother's nerdy transformers friends.

However, Sophie like many other transformers fans is very introverted and had her profile set to private. So picked Solla Sollew because they were next to her. But Solla Sollew is a band, so I picked spud by pure default.

And it seems I can't get out of country victoria. Spud has 98 friends, likes beer so much he feels he has to justify his mass consumption of it. He also likes to through the odd reference to Transformers around for good measure.

Alas, he is not in my extended network. So here's to Spud, the one person that myself does not claim that I have a very tenuous link to!

I proved myspace wrong, in some sort of way. I'm interested to see if anyone can go from a random 'cool new person' and trace back to themself.
