I was hunting through my parents' vinyl collection to see if they have any Eagles records for my broadcast course assignment (they don't). But I did find something infinitely more cooler and I don't know which parental unit is responsible for this piece of vinyl gold, but whichever one it is, my respect level has now shot way up for them.
We own 'Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass Greatest Hits' IN STEREO no less!
Gah... I'm seeing smiling and nodding from everyone else who's reading this, going "Who the heck is Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and why is Jess making such a fuss over them?"
Well, they're a group from the 60's that I first discovered when I was doing Saturday evening weather shifts at Channel 31. You see Channel 31 has a severe lack of budget therefore, if you stay on a shift long enough, you've seen every show on in that timeslot at least twice or thrice. Repeats of Hollywood Palace was the best thing about that shift. Damn, they don't make variety tv like that anymore...
Anyway, Herb Alpert et al. made an appearance on Hollywood Palace and they played Spanish Flea and Tijuana Taxi. They're songs that you've all heard, you just don't know where you've heard them and you sure as hell don't know who did it.
But now you do. Do yourself a favour (in the least Molly Meldrum-ish way) and try and listen to their stuff. It's really unique brassy stuff. Plus Mexican music is hot.
I was almost going to make them a 'freaky pick' on Palaver but the whole vinyl thing killed that dream!
